Counting Numbers 1-10 Resources

Learning the little numbers 1 through 10 marks an important moment in the development of a child. The basis for knowing all other counting numbers is these numbers. Browse the various materials in the Learning Library that teach students how to understand, write and count 1 to 10-the first step to infinity. (Little kids later apply the same counting concept to get all the way to 100.)

Numbers are the basis upon which all mathematical concepts are founded, and counting to 10 is the first introduction to them by your student. While it is tempting to simply teach as you would with the alphabet by memorization, it is crucial for learners to realize that numbers represent a quantity of something. This is called cardinality.

When teaching to count up to ten items to reinforce cardinality, the main ideas to bear in mind are:

  • Count each object by saying the numbers in standard order, associating only one object with each number. Each apple only gets one number when counting apples, so an apple isn’t counted twice.
  • Explain that the entire sum of items is measured by the last number you hit. Students should recognize that the number associated with that one is the total sum of apples as they hit the last apple.
  • A rise in total quantity is defined by each successive number. The basis for simple addition and subtraction is laid by this definition. One more than one apple is two apples. One more than two apples are three apples.
  • Explain that the answer to “How many?” is this last number”

When teaching to count, it is important to use distinct methods. The more ways in which a student connects with numbers, the greater their overall comprehension.
